Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a young girl, Catherine Ford struggled with an obsessional disorder, and also suffered from anxiety due to the word association. Ford was fascinated by acting during her teens, and joined the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized this school wasn't for her. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place at the third time, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. A classmate of hers included Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but at the time, she had already made her TV debut on a 1991 episode in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in such programs on television as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. However, Tate quickly began gaining notice for her stand-up comedy and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
