The character was invented by writer-producer Ehren Kruger, and played by Naomi Watts, serves as the protagonist in The Ring and The Ring Two, sharing similarities to Reiko Asakawa from the original Japanese films.Introduced in the 2002 film, Rachel is an investigative journalist who must figure out how to avoid the death penalty after viewing the video of a cursed character that she discovers while investigating the death of her niece. In The Ring Two, Rachel must delve into the history of Samara Morgan following the death of her son who suffers from a mysterious ailment.In The Ring, Rachel Keller is an investigative journalist is approached by her sister Ruth to find out the mysterious circumstances behind her niece Katie's death. Rachel is informed by her sister Ruth that she discovered Katie's deformed body inside the closet. She also discovered that Katie was killed by an attack on her heart. Katie's friends tell Rachel about the myth of the tape with the curse and the story of Katie's friend Becca was taken to an institution following Katie's passing. Katie's boyfriend, as well as two of her best friendsall perished due to strange accidents that occurred in the same evening at 10:30 pm. Rachel travels to Shelter Mountain Inn and stays in Cabin 12, which is the exact cabin in which Katie and her companions were watching the videotape with the curse. Rachel discovers the tape and when it's finished when the phone starts to ring. Rachel hears a voice utter "seven days". Rachel seeks assistance from her former boyfriend Noah Clay, a video analyst. Then, Rachel discovers that Aidan, her son with Noah has watched the tape at the same time that Noah calls her and assures him that he trusts her. Rachel investigates the lighthouse on the tape and discovers it is located on Moesko Island, the home of a horse breeder who was ill-fated named Anna Morgan, who appeared on the videotape with the curse. Rachel finds out that Anna had an adoptive daughter, Samara. Samara was capable of creating disturbing images that were able to be projected into the minds of animals, humans as well as objects. Rachel has to go to Anna's widower Richard when she begins asking questions about Samara.
